Some Silver from The Mirage, Las Vegas

For the last year or so on Tuesdays I have been participating in Three Tune Tuesday. However, today I just didn't feel musically inspired. So today I think I'll do something different. This particular post I started some time back but never quite got around to finishing it until today.

I have collected Silver Striker tokens for years now. These are commemorative silver tokens produced for casinos around the world which could be won by playing the Silver Striker slot machines. I haven't seen any of these machines in years so I'm not sure if they make them anymore. There were a few times that I won some of these by playing the slots, but you always tended to lose more than they ever paid out. That's how slot machines make money! They are called one armed bandits for a reason...

The tokens I usually collect are from defunct casinos because they are more interesting. A piece of history that has passed us by. When I picked this one up the casino was still in operation, this has been in my collection for years already. But when The Mirage shut down I thought in might be fun to share it.

About the token

These are nice because they are made with roughly 0.65 Troy ounces of pure silver surrounded by a brass ring. They are great to collect because they are a precious metal and also the variety out there to collect is near endless. I tend to pick these up on eBay if I find a good deal which is rare anymore. I used to buy them when I was in Las Vegas going to pawn shops that always had lots of them available. It's been several years since I've been to there so I'm not sure how easy they are to find in pawn shops anymore. But they are cool!

Kind of an interesting fact about this one is a variant from the typical design. Does it make it more valuable? Who knows... I didn't realize it was a variant until I looked up the information on silverstrikers.com this morning.

The Mirage

The Mirage Hotel and Casino was an iconic landmark on the Las Vegas Strip. It was a project run by Steve Wynn who acquired the land in 1986 from actress Grace Hayes who was a star in early Hollywood. After spending $630 million dollars the hotel and casino opened in 1989, being the most expensive one ever built at the time. It was estimated that the property needed to make one million dollars a day in order to cover daily expenses, and most thought this impossible.

Instead of focusing on gambling the focus became on entertainment. This model changed the Las Vegas forever, as resorts would begin to draw customers through extravagant shows and activities. One of their biggest acts being Siegfried & Roy with their white tiger show as well as a dolphin habitat. It also became a popular venue for boxing matches drawing in the sports loving crowds. Nothing ever last forever in Las Vegas, after 34 years in business it was shut down in July of this year moving into the annals of history. However, it did leave a mark on how hotel/ casinos were run forever along the strip.

Don't feel to bad about that. I have a feeling I am going to reach a point here where I just need to take a break from TTT. I can't say when it will be and it will probably hit me out of left field, but as much as I love music, sometimes I just am not feeling it.

Over $1 million a day just to break even that’s pretty incredible! For very wealthy individuals this was probably pocket change…☺️
Sounds like the casino had a good run and you like you said all things come to an end….

They sure made that money back and more. When there's that much money at stake you would need nerves of steel to make that investment. Is is a cool token though!

To build it from loans initially. Banks and investment groups are willing to lend the money if they earn enough interest. But the property after than earned millions daily off of the casino but even more so from their shows and luxury restaurants at reasonable prices. Las Vegas isn't only a gambling city anymore, it's more about entertainment.

You know what's funny? It's more a family oriented city now with shows and entertainment for the whole family. It used to be about the casinos, but now they really push fun for the whole family.

I just remember Las Vegas being the city of luxurious casinos and all that. It's good that you've opened up more to welcome and entertain the family as a whole.

When silver was less than $20 you could get them cheap. Usually less than $10. But now they have become more popular, it's hard to find one under $30 anymore. If they are the gold plated variety they usually go for more than $50. They were made by casinos worldwide, I even have one from Aruba. I prefer the ones from Vegas though especially if the casino is no longer in existence.
