I love Sunday mornings, I get to wake up a little late and make some good coffee. It's one of those very low stress days, I need more of those! I hope you're all having a great weekend so far, I know I have. Even the weather here has been nice, warm and sunny but not hot. I know I talk about moving out California every now and again, but days like these make we want to stay!

Sunday is the day I always handle my weekly giveaway. It's hard to believe it's coming up on it's one year anniversary next week, I really never thought there was enough interest to keep it going more than a few months. It does feel good to help out all of my friends here on Hive to grow their accounts, and HSBI and DUO tokens area great way to do it.

This next week I will be adding in some one year anniversary surprise prizes, so you don't want to miss out on entering this week's contest! So let's get into the action, first the highlights from last week's pick of your favorite shark!

Before we dive in, one major shark was not picked by anyone, so the humble bull shark will not be participating today! Even though it can live in fresh water and has even been found a thousand miles up the Amazon river, it has been excluded. Poor shark!

Great White

flipboard.com

Sorry, wrong day, it's not Three Tune Tuesday!

oceanscubadive.com

The great white shark is probably the most feared shark in the oceans thanks to a little movie called Jaws. The irony is that the shark attack that inspired the book Jaws actually took place in a river. That means the real culprit was likely a bull shark, as they can live in fresh water. Human attacks are exceeding rare but often fatal due to the large size the animal!

These predators can grow up to 19 feet (5.8 meters) in length in females, which are always larger than the male great white sharks. They can be found in coastal waters worldwide although they are more common in some areas. They are responsible for about ten attacks yearly on humans, and for the most part aren't all that interested in people. Despite their immense size they still are hunted by orcas who like to eat their livers that are rich in fats and nutrients. This shark is considered vulnerable to endangered and is protected around the world, and they have been making a comeback in numbers in the last decade.

I've never seen one of these in nature, and I'm perfectly happy to keep it that way! This was picked by nine participants, thanks to @henruc , @angeluxx , @freed99 , @ekavieka , @helicreamarket , @logen9f , @lumpiadobo , @rainbowdash4l , @vaynard86 !

Hammerhead Shark

sharks-world.com

This unique family of sharks uses their oddly shaped head to electrically sense rays living under the sand as well as other prey. They can grow very large up to over 19 feet (6 meters) in some species. Although people often fear them they rarely are aggressive towards humans with only 17 documented attacks on people since the year 1580, and none were fatal. They are really cool to see in the wild and I've seen many in the Caribbean over the years. There are even expeditions that take tourists out to snorkel with the sharks, that would really cool!

Thanks to @flummi97 , @sylmarill , @powerpaul , @florakese , @shiftrox , @tortangkahoy , @borniet and @geneeverett for this great pick!

Tiger Shark

waterlust.com

The tiger shark is an apex predator in tropical and subtropical waters around the world. The are easily identified from the stripe like appearance on their sides and grow up to 16.5 feet (5 meters.) These sharks will eat just about anything they comes across including non edible objects. I have seen many of these over the years while diving and for the most part they really don't care much about people and keep their distance. Attacks tend to happen in murky waters where the shark mistakes humans for fish, although exceeding rare they have attacked people in clear water while surfing, diving, or beach going. Their attack rate on humans is second only to the great white, although both are very uncommon. You are much more likely to be struck by lightning than attacked by a shark.

My personal theory on any shark around you is to be careful, it they become curious it's not a bad idea to get out of the water! Thanks to @doombot75 , @daddydog , @hatdogsensei , @monkmasters , @olaf.gui and @ronnie10 for this great pick!

Lemon Shark

en.wikipedia.org

These sharks can grow up to eleven feet in length (3.4 meters) and their yellowish hued skin makes them easily identifiable. It's believed that it makes them less visible on the sandy ocean bottom. They are found in tropical to subtropical waters around the world and are harmless to humans. They are typically found in coastal waters along reefs and mangrove swaps, they will on occasion swim into rivers but rarely stray very far into fresh water. They are considered a threatened species due to over fishing. I have seen a couple of these over my years of diving, they are pretty sharks!

Thanks to @silvertop and @longganisan for this pick!

Dogfish Shark

artofit.org

These are smaller sharks from 39-49 inches (100-125 cm) in length and were named after dogs as they tend to hunt in packs as do dogs. They prey on smaller fish and squid and are fairly common family of sharks. I have never seen one myself in the wild but have seen them in aquariums if I recall correctly. It's been awhile! Thanks for this choice by @alexvan and @edreisito !

Baby Shark

sheknows.com

Not quite as terrifying as the great white or tiger shark comes in the show Baby Shark. Thanks for the fun pick by @whywhy and @dewabrata !

Leopard Shark

security.riverbanks.org

These distinctively marked sharks are relatively small at 4 to 5 feet (1.2-1.5 meters) in length and live along the coastal waters off of North America down into Mexico. They eat mainly small fish and even clams, and are harmless to humans. They are seen most commonly in shallow waters as bigger sharks see them as prey. I have seen these before off of California, they have really cool markings!

They are commonly fished off of the Pacific coast, but limits are closely set to avoid population decline. Thanks for a great pick by @vcclothing !

Blue Shark

ar.inspiredpencil.com

These sharks live world wide in temperate waters and tend to prefer deep water. The grow up to ten feet (3.1 meters) in length. Squid is their preferred diet although other small fish and octopus are also on the menu. These sharks rarely attack people, with only 13 documented bites from 1580 until 2013. They do tend to get caught up in fishing net and long lines, making them a near threatened species. I've never seen one these before, but would be fun to see in the wild. Since they live in cooler waters I think that's unlikely to happen, I prefer warm water! This was picked by @tengolotodo , thanks!

danawharf.com

Thank goodness @gwajnberg picked this big fish so it didn't get left out. The largest shark by far is the whale shark. Growing up to 61 feet (18.8 meters) this gentle giant of the sea eats plankton and krill by filter feeding. Sadly overfishing has left these guys endangered and are protected worldwide now. I would love to see one of these in person, but have never been so lucky. They are just so rare that they aren't seen very often. But the largest shark and maybe the coolest of them all is the whale shark!

And thanks to @suisver for the pick of Red Shark, although I don't think they exist in nature. At least I haven't seen one! lol If you have, let me know!

This week's entry question:

What is your favorite seafood?

The Giveaway

I will be giving out one prize of five (5) HSBI. Second and Third prizes will be 2 DUO tokens, the token I recently launched with @bulliontools and @bitcoinman . It offers those who stake sufficient tokens daily curation on quality posts, dividends, and a tipping bot. It also helps to onboard and retain new Hive members. At the end of the post there is a link to the white paper and where to purchase the tokens. Fourth prize is 100 BBH tokens. To participate you need a reputation level of at least 25 and bots cannot win. And please one entry per person to make it fair to everyone.

@alohaed is generously kicking in two HSBI to the second place winner and one to the third place winner. Thanks for you support my friend!

If you would like to be placed on a weekly reminder list just let me know and I'll make sure you get tagged each week.

I really like sharks but I don't want to be near one hahaha. I don't fear them, but respect them. Although I maybe would like to be near a whale shark.

I'm not really a friend of seafood but if I had to choose, I would say squids or octopus.

And add me to the tag list for the next giveaways, please.

Seafood now I could put down a few as I love seafood.

However, I like to be the odd one out. I could have put mussels, squid, crab, lobster etc but I shall say ...

Spoot!

They are razor shellfish

That’s a very difficult question to an Italian. We eat a lot of seafood. Most Americans will probably choose lobster. But unless you are eating lobster from Maine the rest are not very tasty in my culinary opinion.
The only seafood that I particularly like is oysters, they feel like a ball of snot in my mouth, and if they are big they are very rubbery in texture.
I know I’m ranting a little….
I’m gonna have to call it a tie between clams and calamari. I make a killer ceviche with both of them and shrimp as well.

The fresher fish is the less it smells it my experience. I'm lucky in that I can go down the the pier and catch a couple fish, take them home and cook them up. I try to go once a week when I have the energy, it's pure "me" time away from the world, It's nice being close to the ocean, I just wish it wasn't so expensive to live here!

Well.. maybe lobsters then, because they're slightly easier to eat. 😁 I really love eating Luke's Lobster Rolls.
