A Well Balanced Goat Cheese Salad
Eating in the harbor
Usually, we visit this restaurant if we are looking to sit in the harbor and have a snack and Belgium beer. The beer is not for me but for my boyfriend, but he loves to have a dark Belgium beer from time to time so then we usually go to this restaurant. Whenever we do, there's a portion of "bitterballen" we order, which is a common Dutch/Belgium snack we all like, although way too expensive buying it here, our daughter likes it so we order it anyway.
She eats this or a "frikandel", another Dutch/Belgium snack. I personally don't crave these snacks anymore and prefer eating something else most of the time so I figured it was time to try something else on the menu for once as most things I tried were close to being great, but usually the sauce they added would spoil it for me. I ordered something we never had before, and hoped for the best.
Goat cheese salad
My daughter was reading the whole menu (for real!) and she did quite well I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly she's learning to read Spanish nowadays. When she arrived at the salads, I decided I'd go for a salad for once. I know many restaurants serve shitty salads but if you're lucky and there's someone that understands how to serve a well-balanced salad, you can have yourself a great and quite cheap meal compared to the other dishes.
Although I was curious about the smoked salmon salad as well, I think this one can be disappointing simply because usually there's just not enough smoked salmon in the salad in my opinion, therefore I went for a safer choice and picked the goat cheese salad.
When it was served, the presentation did not disappoint at all! I was very happily surprised by the well-balanced salad and expected it to be great. I can tell you, it was delicious! I will order this again next time!
Pork tenderloin
Now you may chuckle a bit reading this, but pork tenderloin is one of these names I never use in English, I know it in Dutch as well as Spanish but I had to ask Google what the name in English is, lol. This happens quite often nowadays that I totally lost touch with some words either in Dutch or English simply because I used them many years ago and only in the other language(s) recently or I never even used them at all back in the old days when most communication was done in another language while ordering food. Whenever this happens, I wonder how long it will take before I lose all sense of the Dutch language and grammar while Spanish takes over.
As you can see the pork tenderloin looks nice, I personally only like a pepper sauce if it's pepper cream sauce, this one is not my forte at all, that's the main reason I don't order this. Also because it's a bit too much meat for one person in my opinion. The salad on the side is also not something that makes me happy but at least it's some greenery added to the meat. Below is the bowl of fries, that we ordered on the side.
You could say that ordering french fries is tricky here, often they are only fried very shortly and taste disgusting. Thankfully, a Belgium restaurant owner knows that you can't serve fries half done. They never fail the fries here, lol.
I was happily surprised by my salad and it also made the bill a bit lower as all meat dishes are quite expensive there because you are sitting in the harbor, a premium spot, which is noticeable looking at the prices. I'm happy that I found a salad that I love so we don't always have to spend a big amount here from now on.
Do you love a meal salad yourself? What type of ingredients do you prefer?
I love bitterballen, my kind of comfort food 😄. In such premium spot, I am honestly surprised with the portions. Back home, premium spot is usually stingy with portions and all they sell is basically the view. Also, for salads, I would prefer something like greek salads and anything with croutons haha. How many languages can your daughter speak now and what language do you use in your house? is it dutch or English & Spanish?
Haha, they are nice, aren't they? Just insanely priced here in the harbor but haven't found them anywhere else. I could order them online but it's difficult because we live in another area as these shops and they only do fresh deliveries so can't guarantee it will arrive frozen. On top of that, we don't have a fryer and I prefer keeping it that way so having them every once in a while in the harbor is probably best..
I have checked a few other restaurants in the harbor and these had insane prices for insane small portions, I think the two restaurants we regularly visit there are the exceptions.
At home, we speak Dutch overall, but also a lot of English, especially when her tutor comes 6 hours a week, and she prefers watching English cartoons. We're trying to motivate her more for Spanish cartoons but so far she secretly switches it back as soon as she can get away with it, lol.
But we try to implement a lot of Spanish in the past months when we can and she picks up on our chats or phone calls and also tries to read everything she sees in Spanish, which is helping her progress quite fast now. At some point, I hope that she can also learn the Dutch language grammar because you never know when it comes in handy. I enjoy speaking as much Spanish as I can but my boyfriend usually falls back to Dutch quite fast and just uses me as his translator, lol.
Either way, all these languages will be great for her growing up..
Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!
