I went from hating olives to loving them

I hated olives my whole life

Whenever my mother would eat them, I'd look at her disgusted how she could eat such a thing. I didn't like the looks nor the smell of them but I admit that it took a long time for me to actually try a bite. When I did, I was even more disgusted, haha. Now it's possible that I was trying the not-so-great olives and that I could have been more successful trying them if I tasted another type of olive.

My boyfriend loves them

When we first arrived in Spain to live here for 14 months, he was always happy when a plate with olives was served as a tapa. I was always disappointed because it meant that this tapa was for him only. I started to prefer the places where we could choose our tapas over those that serve them because most of the time these were either olives or sardines. I disliked both of these options. You can safely say that I was appalled by both of these tapas lol.

I was determined to try them again

When we planned the move to Spain last year, I decided to be more open to new foods as well as food that I always disliked because I know there are different types of preparation as well as different types of serving things, making it more appealing when you try eating things with something else combined. Therefore, the first moment we were served olives in Spain, I tried eating them. I didn't like it still, my boyfriend told me these weren't the olives he preferred either. This actually made me confident to try it again the next time and so I did.

Long story short, when we were served the right ones, I said 'Damn, these are tasty' and this was a moment my boyfriend would have loved capturing as I was so appalled by these things before, it was a bit weird to hear me say that I really liked them. Since that moment, I've always tried them when they were served for free, and not long after, I started ordering them as a tapa as well.

So many options

I know now that there is a huge difference in all the olives that you can buy. Many are stuffed but I don't feel like trying yet. A lot of them are bright green while others are darker green. We thought that we discovered that those we love are with "manzanilla" which is chamomile but when we bought them these were not the same either but came close. I bought another type, these were even more different and not alike at all, so it definitely depends on which brand you buy, that's for sure.

Promotions

While Carrefour had the 2x1 promotion again, I discovered they had these Carbonell olives where you buy 2 and get 1 paid back into savings. This was a good moment to buy a premium brand and see if I like these better. I have to say, OH MY GOD these are SOOO delicious! I was not prepared for how much I liked these. I tried them last weekend in the morning, for breakfast (I mean, what the heck, a while ago I still hated these things!) and I didn't just eat 2 but filled up the tapa bowl for it. My boyfriend had to get used to them and started to love them the second time, but now we're both Fans with a capital F. As the promotion ends this week, I loaded up 4 pots of these olives, they are that good!

In case you were curious which ones I meant, here they are.

Healthy snack

Since that I embraced the olives in my life, I have had several moments of craving something, fulfilling my cravings with these olives instead of something unhealthy like sweets or chips etc. I read that olives are a good snack as they contain healthy fats as well as make you feel full longer. Now I also know that you should not overeat them (as with most things, lol) but stick to a normal portion to enjoy the most health benefits. I don't mind eating a handful a day now that I know there are such tasty ones available.

Do you like olives? Or maybe you hate them like I did? Let me know in a comment below, I'm curious if I've been a bit strange for hating them all my life.

Oh I can totally see myself loving more sorts over time. I already knew I had to try them more than a few times to get used to the taste (as I also always tell my daughter, so I was trying to set the right example as well haha). There are a few that I really don't like which they sometimes serve for tapas. I don't know how to identify them / what they're called exactly to make sure I don't get the wrong ones served so if this happens, we just eat them, or just a few.

Now that you gave the pizza tip, I wondered if they would be good on pizza too :) haha

Thanks for stopping by!

They are great on pizza. When my son was younger he love pizza with black olives and nothing else! Green olive go well too. Tapas can be interesting, I've had some that tasted a little fishy, not my favorite flavor in olives!

You may have been presented with those stuffed with anchovies. I see them in overload in supermarkets and always wonder if everyone is so fond of these that they sell them in bulk.

Even our favorite tapas restaurant isn't consistent in what they serve for olive tapas, if you get them for free (happens a lot) or when you order them for a tapa, they are either the good or the bad ones, I have to find out how to call them so I can ask if they have the right ones lol.

The great thing about tapas is that you can try new things for often as little as 2 euros. We've learned about quite a few new things thanks to not getting broke while trying, lol.

I will try a pizza with olives soon to see if that's for me.

You can't beat the price! Anchovies I'm still learning to like them, but it's a slow process!

I love olives too :') but just like you I love a good deal (2+1) more. xD

We don't get them as much in India.

But when I went to turkey 6 years ago, me and my wife used to eat them all day long.

I think it's more normal to have them in certain countries like Spain and maybe Turkey as well. I can't remember if I saw them a lot during my 11 times in Turkey because at that time I was not interested in them, lol.

What I do remember is that they were expensive in Holland as they are imported. Here they are obviously more affordable and with a deal like buy two and get the second one paid back in the savings check, I'm in, haha.

I bet soon I will find more sorts that I love, I just have to keep trying them when they offer them in restaurants for a tapa.

Hope you're doing well! How's the AI journey going? I've been ill for a few weeks and have not been up to date about much tbh.

Have a good week ahead!

(Edited)

I had an idea (when I was young) that olives were sophisticated and at some do, I served up little bowls with the green ones stuffed with pimento on cocktail sticks - yes, the whole 80s' thing, although this was still 1979 😂

Then I ate one: disgusting!

I can't remember the rest of the journey exactly - I discovered I preferred olives in brine to the salted ones, I loved them chopped up in pasta sauces, but couldn't really say I liked olives.

Then I spent some time in Cyprus and discovered fat, meaty, soft, dark Kalamata olives pickled in red wine vinegar. Oh my days!

I eat other olives now, going more for those marinated in oil and vinegar, but still in love with the Kalamata ones, I try to keep to seven a day and not the whole jar. I always think the marinade could be used for something but generally it gets thrown away before I come up with an idea.

The thing I wonder is what kept me trying them after that first ghastly bite?

Sardines are a different story: I have loved them from start to finish, preferably fresh from the sea, cooked on a charcoal grill and served with lemon and a napkin for greasy hands. But I'll eat them from the tin, too 😁

Haha, this made me LOL :)

That's so funny to read, about your olive journey! Thank you for sharing that. I only know that some are black and others are light because of the process but I have no clue about the different sorts and other ways or marinating them so I guess I still have a lot to discover, try and learn about olives. Thankfully, these are available in abundance here and often you get served some olives so that doesn't leave us with a full jar of them if we don't like them.

I was also thinking to use the ones we have in a big jar (those that we like a bit less than these shared above) in a salad or maybe a dip, I don't know I have to figure out what I want to try so they won't be wasted. I hate wasting food, already had to throw out some chicken filet this weekend which I think is such a waste.

On the grill a lot of things taste better, I never had sardines from the grill though, they just fry them here and I don't like it at all, lol. I will try them from the grill if they ever serve me these because I also think a lot of veggies taste fabulous on the grill and learned to eat them because of that preparation.

Thank you for stopping by <3
