Of all the songs in Bob Seger's catalog, "Old Time Rock & Roll" is probably the best known. If you stopped a stranger on the street and played Barry Beckett's indelible eight-note piano prelude, you can bet he would immediately say, "Take that old record off the shelf...".

With film and television appearances and Tom Cruise's memorable lip sync on "Risky Business," "Old Time Rock & Roll" became the most memorable song from Seger's 1978 hit, Stranger In Town, and the theme song. official classic rock radio. . . ("Classic rock"). However, it is important to remember that his story did not begin that way.

Stranger In Town plays FM radio with some great songs. But Old Time Rock & Roll wasn't one of them. Instead, radio picked up the ballad "Still The Same" and the big rocker "Hollywood Nights," both of which showcased Seger's storytelling talents. Then came Seger's first hit, "We've Got Tonight," based on a simple love ballad. All three songs were released as singles and entered FM radio. They all scored 20 points, meaning Seger outperformed Night Moves commercially. But radio isn't over yet for Stranger In Town.

Many stations later chose "Feel Like A Number" as the hardest rock song on the album. With its defiant sound and anti-authoritarian lyrics, "...Number" showed that Seger was not far from the punk movement.

After almost a year in stores, Stranger In Town has been pulled from shelves to play Old Time Rock & Roll. In the context of the album, it is a more upbeat and self-consciously retro song than the other songs, and is one of two non-original songs on the album, written by George Jackson and Thomas Earl Jones III.

Perhaps the only thing that is not true is the lyrics. How disappointed would you have been to think in 1978 that "today's music doesn't have the same soul"? Seger's fans loved him for his quick abandon of disco, but 1978 was truly energetic. From some of the girls in the Rolling Stones to Funkadelic, it was a year where funk, punk and mainstream rock were at an all-time high. One Nation Under A Groove, Springsteen's Darkeness At The Edge Of Town and The Cars' debut album. 1978 was a very good mood year and Bob Seger was one of the many reasons.
