Three Tune Tuesday - Some Saxy Jazz

It's time again for Three Tune Tuesday, that day of the week where members of the Hive community shares three songs of their liking with the rest of the community.

I take a slow, relaxing approach to Three Tune Tuesday: I like to share pre-1924 78rpm songs from my collection, and record them while playing on an appropriate time-period windup phonograph. I encourage you to take a few moments and slow down with me. Settle down, close your eyes, and take yourself back.. way back.. in time, to a distant uncle's parlour in the early 1920's. There are comfortable seats, pleasant conversation, and old music.

This week I decided to theme my songs around saxophone jazz. A couple weeks back I shared the song Egyptland from Six Brown Brothers and received positive replies to it. @tengolotodo, in particular, really enjoyed the song, so I wanted to take a stab at one-upping it.

First song of the week is Wang Wang Blues by Bennie Krueger's Orchestra. Interesting name, no? There are two competing ideas as to where the name came from: it was either a riff off of police sirens of the day, which sounded like "wang wang wang wang," or it was an onomatopoeic representation of a horn riff. A lot of famous jazz artists did their version of this song, including Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, and Louis Armstrong. This version by Bennie Krueger was recorded on the Brunswick label in 1921.

Thomas Edison had his own Edison record label and phonograph as well. The Edison phonographs were completely, absolutely, 100% incompatible with any of the other phonographs of the day. There were a number of differences in how the sound on the record was encoded, to the stylus, to the motor. Despite being a superior technology they were not as popular. One of the reasons for their small market share was the music that Edison allowed to be recorded on his labels; he usually did not allow more modern music to be recorded.

One exception was the song Saxophone Fantasie by Rudy Wiedoeft. Rude was a jazz musician, and a pretty good one at that. "Saxophone virtuoso" is how he has been described.

Finally, the third song of the day is another by Six Brown Brothers. This band was literally a family of six brothers, all of whom played saxophone. They were very popular in the 19102-1930s and toured extensively through the US and Canada.

The song I have for you by them this week is Saxophone Sobs, recorded in 1921 on the Victor label. The song is based on the idea of a saxophone "sobbing" for it's lost love.
