Today I had an unexpected laptop project to do. My parent's laptop is giving the infamous BSOD, or "blue screen of death".

I managed to get the Laptop to boot a few times, but after about two or three minutes, it's BSOD again.

As an added challenge: this laptop has bitlocker so any access to the data requires entering a long key. Thankfully I was able to access my parent's Microsoft Account for the key. Scary to think if a hacker gained access to a Microsoft Account, any hardware encryption is useless - but it helped me in this situation!

I managed to get into "safe mode" after jumping through some hoops. I ran some repairs via command prompt and was very optimistic with the scan as it found and fixed some corrupted system files.

I rebooted and it came up! I thought it was fixed, I was about to return it to my parents.... but then another BSOD.

Booo!

I wasn't planning on spending hours working on a laptop, but my parents have happily used this portable for many years without many problems - it seems what's coming up now is hardware related.

I'm giving this portable one last chance with a total reset, reinstall of windows. Let's see how this goes. If it goes well, they can get a few more years out of this laptop! It's only about FOUR years old.

Let's see what happens next!
