Black Shack

Just below the mountain's peak lay an abandoned shack. It was eerie, and filthy, and no signs of life around it.

Travelers used to go and take pictures. Dirty as it was, it proved intriguing for fans of internet influencers.

Lately, however, people say there's a ghost living there. Strange sounds come from the shack. Scaring the bravest of men.

A trio of mountain climbers came one day. Excited to prove the rumors wrong.

The first guy's lamp turned off.

The second guy's bag vanished away.

The third guy's leg stuck on something. He couldn't move from there.

The three men had the scare of their lives.

The two guys helped the other one to free his leg from whatever it was stuck on. They began to run away when they heard groaning sounds.

A shadow approached the shack.

The three men ran away. Everything they saw, they recorded on their phones. Their mission failed.

Act 2

Tired from hunting, I went back home. Hungry as I caught no prey.

I saw three shadows screaming away from my house.

I tried to greet them, but my voice was hoarse. I didn't interact with people for so long.

I entered my house and found another plank crushed on the weary floor. The men must've messed up my home.

I hit my head with something as I reached the bedroom. Some bag dangled from the ceiling, its top stuck between the wooden walls.

I took out my dusty blanket and slept away. Wishing the men who came greeted me at least.

As I slept alone, I silently regretted my choice of abandoning society to move to such an isolated space, but I wouldn't know how to return.

Tomorrow is another day of fighting for my food.

Epilogue

"The Adventurers" video went viral. The bravery and cowardness they showed out for the world to see.

People finally saw the ghost's real face. Hairy. Gap-toothed. Blank-eyed. In the dark, it looked barely human.

Some people knew he was a regular man, but in some places, the ghost story became even more credible.

Author Notes

I enjoyed writing this piece. This #FreeWrite story was written for 14 Nov 2023's Prompt: "Just below the summit." It's the first #freewrite piece I write in Act structure.

I wrote more than half of the story after the 5 minutes of the FreeWrite session ended. If I had 10 minutes I would've at least started Act 2.

I based the story on a generic horror setting, but I wanted it to be funny instead of scary. The story is told from two perspectives. The men who came to prove the rumors wrong, and the man who's seen by the world as a ghost.

The poor man's face has been captured in a footage, and people still though he wasn't a human. If you chuckled while reading this, I'll mark this story a success.
