Nineties Friday with Nirvana...

Happy Friday everyone! This week there has been a new contest started by @geneeverett for Friday posts. The focus will be everything 1990's and fittingly is called #ninetiesfriday , so music, TV show, commercials, food,.... and pretty much anything from the decade that you want to share. I will be sponsoring three HSBI to the winner in addition to some @geneeverett is throwing in the pot as well. I'll include his post link to check out more information at the end of my post today.

I didn't experience the 1990's like most people in the Unites States or Europe. I spent most of the decade living in South America and the Caribbean so I really missed out on the whole grunge culture. Most of my decade was more defined by Latin music and the Spanish speaking world. But I eventually caught up on the 90's when I was working back in the US in the 2000's.

The end of the 1980's music scene was driven by glam metal bands from Los Angeles. That all changed with the introduction of the band Nirvana. All of the sudden the music scene was Seattle where Nirvana had it's roots. So I would be most remiss if I didn't start of by sharing something by Nirvana!

Curt Cobain, Dave Grohl, and Krist Novoselic formed the band in 1987 and had their breakthrough success with the album Nevermind. The band became insanely popular very quickly due to heavy play on MTV with their first single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and subsequent releases from the same album. They released their second album "In Utero" in 1993 with continued success. However, Cobain's heroin addiction was becoming a problem as well as his depression. He committed suicide the following year after becoming a musical icon, just goes to show that money and fame don't always make you happy... Be careful what you wish for!

Here's "Smells Like Teen Spirit":

The Offspring

I couldn't resist but include my favorite band of the 1990's, The Offspring. I've shared this one before on Three Tune Tuesday, but it's a fun song. Here's "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)":

Foo Fighters

A nineties set of songs wouldn't be complete without the legendary Foo Fighters. After Cobain's death Dave Grohl wasn't sure what to do. He considered getting another drumming job in some other band, but fate took him a different direction. Instead he formed his own band where he was the front man. The Foo Fighters quickly gained a following and have been producing music ever since. The loss of their drummer Taylor Hawkins recently was a shock to everyone. A good reminder that life is short and you never know when the end will come.

Here's a fun song and video, "Breakout":

I was a little worried I wouldn't have time to get anything put together today, and I was fortunate to find a few free minutes to get this post put together. I hope that you enjoyed the time travelling musical trip back to the 1990's. Like always if you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below. Have a great weekend everyone!

And since I am posting in the #freecompliments community I just wanted to remind everyone to take some time today to be kind. A little kindness can make a huge difference in someone's life. Please check out the community and consider joining us!

Here's the promised link over to check out @geneeverett 's post!

Feel free to use it! Thanks, I thought it was a good mix. Nearly put in some Live as well but went with Foo Fighters instead!

I’ve never been a real fan of Nirvana. I used to prefer other bands back in the day, but here’s my favorite from them (I love those drums):

I love that one, Dave Grohl was a monster on the drums in that one. I was never a huge Nirvana fan either, I really didn't get to know their music well until much later long after Cobain's death. He was talented guy, but very, very dark.

The pressures of being on top of the music scene, then add heroin on top of that……🙄
You’re so correct, money and success, will not always bring you happiness!😮

I know I did, I did see some good ones in South America though like GNR and Metallica.

(Edited)

I’ve seen both many times. I actually saw GNR when it was the true GNR. Right before they released Appetite For Destruction, they played at L’Amours in Queens. My older brother got me in. Tommy Guns was still in the band then. I also saw Metallica at Jones beach before they were big. I also hung out with them in the parking lot of WDHA radio station back then. They had a Metal Mania show on Fridays hosted by Eddie Trunk. I met tons of bands that way in the late 80’s. We used to hang out in the parking lot.

That was a great time to see them in the early days, I think it was 92 when they were in Santiago, Chile.

That must have been cool to hang out with the bands. Eddie Trunk is a legend!

Awesome.

Yeah I was in a band named Force of Four that won a battle of the bands which was sponsored by WDHA and Eddie Trunk was one of the judges. We got to be a fourth opener for Slayer at a small venue called the Showplace in Dover. Which ironically is now a strip bar, but they kept the name. Unfortunately we didn’t last very long together. But we played a bunch of cool places.
